How do you prepare matooke the correct Ugandan way?

Great question. Let’s teach you how to prepare Uganda’s most eaten food. 😎
Traditional matooke is peeled, wrapped in banana leaves, and steamed. You place banana leaf-lined pieces in a saucepan, add the matooke, cover tightly with more leaves, and steam for 1.5–2 hours. After it softens, you mash (kunyiga in luganda) it while still inside the leaves and serve it with, groundnut sauce, beef, chicken or beans.
Enjoy. You can even eat at breakfast with tea. We call it egolu (cold left-over matooke and other foods). If you have no bread, you have egolu.
